GUELPH, ON (September 16, 2025) — The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) is working to keep pets safe by offering a low-cost microchip clinic on Saturday, September 20th, to help make it easier to bring lost pets back home.
The clinic will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the GHS located at 190 Hanlon Creek Blvd., providing microchipping services for both cats and dogs at a fee of $40 per pet.
“Microchips are simple, yet extremely effective as they play a big role in reuniting lost pets with their families.” said Kate Glaab, GHS’s Community Programs & Outreach Coordinator. “Unlike a collar microchips are permanent, so if a pet is lost, their owner’s information can always be found through the
chip.”
Toki, a local Guelph cat, was found astray from her home last month. She was brought into GHS by a kind community member. Once she arrived at the shelter her owners were promptly notified of her arrival at the shelter because of her microchip information. Toki was safely returned to her owners that same day.
The microchipping procedure involves implanting a chip, about the size of a grain of rice, under the pet’s skin between the shoulder blades. This chip carries a unique identification number that, when scanned by a shelter or veterinary clinic, links to the owner’s contact information. The process is quick, safe, and causes minimal discomfort to the animal.
“If you move or change your phone number it is important for owners to remember to update their information on their pet’s microchip file.” Glaab noted. “This is the best way to ensure that your missing pet can be returned as quickly as possible.”
Proceeds from the clinic will support GHS programs that provide veterinary care and shelter to abandoned animals in need.
Appointments are required and can be booked online at guelphhumane.ca/microchip-clinic. For more information, contact programs@guelphhumane.ca or call 519-824-3091.
