Why adopt a working cat?
Sometimes, the cats that come into our care aren’t suited for a traditional household environment. These cats are typically feral: fearful of humans, do not enjoy human interaction or handling, have likely not lived inside a house, and/or are displaying other behaviours determined by our animal care team to make these cats best suited for an alternative home.
Although these cats won’t be in the household, they will make a wonderful addition to your family and offer many benefits such as rodent control and keeping wandering cats away. Of course, the best benefit of all is offering a home to a cat in need!
GHS working cats come spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, a value of over $400. There is no set adoption fee for our working cats, however, we suggest a minimum donation of $50 when adopting one of our working cats, which allows us to continue to provide care to even more feline friends!
We are always looking for interested adopters for our working cats.
How does the program work?
To be considered for a working cat, you must:
- have a room/area to contain the cat for the first 2-4 weeks, so they don’t immediately run away,
- provide access to shelter during the cold winter months and at nighttime to keep them safe, and
- provide food and water daily (even though we’re sure they’ll help keep the rodent population down!)
Approved applications will be added to our waitlist. When we have a working cat (or cats) available, our adoptions team will reach out to everyone on our waitlist with more information.
