I first met Libby in January 2013 at the PetSmart on Silvercreek. I had asked the staff if I could pet the kitties to help socialize them, and I was immediately smitten with her beautiful eyes and demeanour. With two kitties already at home, and one with special needs, I didn’t know whether we could adopt another kitty — however a month later I noticed that Libby was STILL in the same crate and had not yet been adopted. I looked at her sheet and saw that she was four years old and her intake with GHS had been three months earlier…so I immediately went home and took a look at my monthly finances to see if we could bring another cat into our home and found that we DEFINITELY could. I signed the paperwork the next day!
Libby is a smart, sassy, extremely polite kitty. I had no idea that cats could be “polite” but compared to my beyond-adorable menace Pixel she certainly is! Libby is an incredibly intelligent cat and with that came a lonnnng process of earning her trust. Her first night at home, she jumped on my lap for a nap, but would absolutely not let me pet her (she would jump off immediately!). She was grumbly when being picked up and grumbly with being petted…but I attributed that to being in a small cage for 3 months and perhaps even having a bit of PTSD and thus trust issues.
I am happy to report that Libby has done a complete 180 since the day that I adopted her. This girl LOVES affection, firm head rubs, and now even belly rubs (unimaginable even a year and a half ago!). She is confident, healthy, happy, and extremely playful. Nearly every single day she will bring me one of her toys as a “gift”. She walks up to me with confidence, staring at my lap until I make room for her to sit (she immediately jumps up when I do!). She rolls over for belly rubs, runs to the kitchen when there’s cheese involved, and knows she’ll get a lick of bacon fat every morning – haha! She keeps me company every day when I’m working in the home office, and purrs nearly immediately when touched. Ah yes, that’s another thing…I didn’t even hear her purr for nearly 1.5 years! She knows her name and comes when called, and jumps onto my lap when I pat it.
I am so happy that I adopted this adorable little lady and showed her that she truly can trust once again. I’m literally writing this as she rolls around playing with a catnip toy at my feet!
I love this little lady and I hope to have her around for a VERY long time!!
