Domino (AKA Spot) was a feral kitten when we adopted him, and so, he came with a few challenges. We clicked with him instantly when we arrived at the Guelph Humane Society, but we were worried that we were not equipped to fully support him through this big change. It was very difficult at times for us because our other cat, Goose (formerly Treble), was a big snuggle bug and wanted to be around us all the time. Domino wanted nothing to do with us for the first little while and hid constantly. We got very scared when he climbed into a gap in the walls of our very old apartment and we had to scoop him out. Though this was an awful experience for him and for us, we started to bond. We think he started to realize that we loved and cared about him and he slowly started to trust us more.
After that incident, he slowly warmed up to us with the help of Goose, who he luckily clicked with immediately. Now, he is the most affectionate and loving cat with us. He sleeps with us every night and loves to be pet and sit with us while we are working. He loves sunbathing and bird watching from his window perch. He is still a bit hesitant around new people, but he warms up if we gently encourage him and remind him of safe spaces if he is feeling overwhelmed. We are so grateful to him and Goose during this pandemic. They have helped us stay calmer and have given us a reason to get up and get going every day. We are in a much better place then we were a few months ago. Now, we are getting ready for our next big adventure: moving to a new city! We know our little family, fur babies included, will get through whatever life throws at us.
