GUELPH, ON. (March 21, 2025) — The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) is working to keep pets safe by offering a low-cost microchip clinic on Saturday, March 29, to help make it easier to bring lost pets back home.

The clinic will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the GHS located at 190 Hanlon Creek Blvd., providing microchipping services for both cats and dogs at a fee of $40 per pet.

“Microchipping is a permanent form of identification that significantly increases the likelihood of a lost pet being returned to its owner,” said Katherine Leonard, GHS’s Manager of Programs and Community Outreach. “Unlike collars and tags that can be lost or removed, a microchip remains with your pet for life.”

The microchipping procedure involves implanting a chip, about the size of a grain of rice, under the pet’s skin between the shoulder blades. This chip carries a unique identification number that, when scanned by a shelter or veterinary clinic, links to the owner’s contact information. The process is quick, safe, and causes minimal discomfort to the animal.

Leonard emphasized the importance of keeping contact information up to date in the microchip registry. “An outdated phone number or address can hinder the reunification process,” she noted.

Proceeds from the clinic will support GHS programs that provide veterinary care and shelter to abandoned animals in need.

Appointments are required and can be booked online at guelphhumane.ca/microchip-clinic. For more information, contact programs@guelphhumane.ca or call 519-824-3091.
