GUELPH, ON. (March 25, 2025) — Pets are family, and can bring hope, companionship and unconditional love to their people. Adopting a pet in need of a home can bring joy to people and also impact communities, alleviating strain on overcrowded shelters. That’s why the Guelph Humane Society (GHS) will be on site for same day adoptions at PetSmart, 183 Silvercreek Pkwy North, March 24 – 30, 2025 for PetSmart Charities of Canada® National Adoption Week. GHS aims to find homes for 15 cats during the event.

The grant funds will be used to support preparing animals for adoption through the PetSmart Charities adoption program, including expanding GHS’s adoption team, offering more in-store, same day adoptions, reducing time in shelter and barriers to adoption—ultimately helping to find home for more animals in need.
PetSmart Charities of Canada connects adoption partners such as GHS with local PetSmart stores to bring adoptable pets into in-store Adoption Centres and events. These include pets of all ages, breeds, temperaments, and energy levels. Staff and volunteers are available to help make matches for people looking to adopt.
“Thanks to the generous support from PetSmart Charities of Canada, we’re able to help more pets find loving homes, faster,” said Lisa Veit, GHS, Executive Director. “In 2024, GHS created 896 new families through our adoptions program. This grant helps us prepare animals for adoption with the care they need, reduce their length of stay, and connect with adopters directly in the community. Every adoption not only changes the life of an animal, it strengthens families and builds a more compassionate community.”
“Our local shelter and rescue partners are overflowing with animals looking for people to love. Adopting or fostering a pet not only enriches your life but is the best way to support your community and local partners like the Guelph Humane Society in their lifesaving work,” said Heidi Marston, director of pet placement at PetSmart Charities of Canada. “There is nothing like the unconditional love of a pet! Please stop by your neighbourhood PetSmart store and meet your new best friend.”
