Through our Wildlife Program, every year the Guelph Humane Society helps over 1000 orphaned, injured, and sick wildlife within Guelph and Wellington County. This would not be possible without the help of our dedicated volunteers who make the long commute to transport wildlife to licensed wildlife rehabilitators where they can receive extra care.

One of our amazing Wildlife Drivers is Irene. Irene has been volunteering with the Guelph Humane Society since 2017 after learning about our volunteer program while adopting her cats Ginger, George, Jenny, Garth, Billy Bob & Ringo through our Working Cat Adoption Program. We can always count on Irene to drive injured and orphaned wildlife to one of our many licensed wildlife rehabilitators, whether it be squirrels, rabbits, robins, or owls! In fact, Irene has logged over 275 hours as a volunteer driver since 2017, including some extra-long trips (sometimes lasting 6+ hours) when local rehabilitators were full.

Being a Wildlife Driver volunteer involves a lot of flexibility in order to get injured/orphaned wildlife off to a rehabilitator as soon as possible once they arrive in our care. But thanks to dedicated volunteers like Irene, we are able to send injured and orphaned wildlife off on their calm, stress-free ride to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator where they can receive the extra care they need within 24 hours.
