If you are an animal lover, the Guelph Humane Society is a great place to volunteer! We not only have an enthusiastic team of staff with many years of experience in animal care and welfare, but have over 300 active volunteers, who provide thousands of hours of service each year and generously share their skills and knowledge with us.

Alyssa is one of those volunteers! Alyssa has been volunteering with us as a foster and volunteer driver since 2018 and is currently studying to be a Veterinarian at the Ontario Veterinary College. With the help of her cat, Maggie, and dog, Ella (pictured), Alyssa has fostered over 25 cats and kittens during her time with us. Thanks to her medical knowledge, Alyssa has been able to help us care for some more challenging fosters including Mowgli, a diabetic dog, and Mitten, a kitten who struggled with a chronic eye infection. Despite their challenges, watching her fosters blossom into happy and healthy pets and go off to their fur-ever homes has been extremely rewarding for Alyssa and has opened her eyes to the world of shelter medicine.

While being a foster volunteer can be extremely rewarding, it takes a lot of dedication and hard work to care for those animals who require close care and medication to keep them happy and healthy. We here at GHS are very fortunate to have so many dedicated fosters, including those, like Alyssa, who have specialized knowledge and experience and can help support our animals on their road to recovery so they can find their Happy Tail.
