Meet our darling girl, Cherokee! Cherokee is a friendly girl who has a shy streak, and can be slightly timid especially around men. However we’re sure with a gentle and patient owner who’s willing to gain her trust and build her confidence, she’ll come around quickly! Cherokee does not like to be left alone and has separation anxiety, she can become destructive and unfortunately is too anxious to be crated. Someone home at least a portion of the day would be preferred. While she has lived in apartments before, we are hoping for a detached home so this girl can get the space she deserves- she does weigh in at 60 pounds after all! Cherokee is house-trained and good in the car but will require regular exercise and mental stimulation- this is not a dog who is happy to entertain herself, she wants to be with you (one of her favourite things to do is play fetch). According to Cherokees previous owner(s) she has lived with kids before and is good with them. We recommend a home with children over the age of 5 to make sure that they are treating her respectfully (e.g., not pulling on her ears, “riding” her like a pony, etc.). Cherokee has lived with a cat and was good with them, however she has not had many interactions with other dogs and as a result can be timid and unsure around new canine companions. She could potentially learn to live with another dog (e.g., an easygoing male dog), but would likely not do well with a hyperactive younger dog or be the dog you can bring to a dog park. She has been diagnosed with mild hip dysplasia, so her new owner(s) would do well to research and be financially prepared to provide ongoing care if needed. Due to her separation anxiety, we require that her new owner(s) sign up for training to set her up for success!
